After a three-year absence, the 2022 reemergence – and re-imagining – of one of the world’s most important auto shows, the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, was a mixed bag, but well worth attending.
After having to cancel the event a few times, and then restructuring it to help increase the draw, this year’s event was an informative test that will influence the next generation of shows.
One of the smallest NAIAS events in recent history – both in participating manufacturers and suppliers, and in attendance – it was a study in maximizing the minimum. Ford, GM, and Stellantis took up significant floor space. EV concepts were sprinkled around, and new model introductions included Ford’s 7th-gen Mustang, Chevy’s Tahoe RST, and Toyota’s Crown and Sequoia. Missing brands included Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Nissan, and Volkswagen, and division brands Acura, Genesis, and Infiniti.
There were hour-long lines waiting for rides in Broncos, F-150 Lightnings, Wranglers, and RAM trucks on simulated test tracks.
Review the photos here, including from an awesome side trip to the Motown Museum, and we’ll have a follow-up to next year’s event, which promises to be better in every respect.
